With the inauguration of the Rambla de Barenys, Salou has gained a new space of almost 3,500 square metres so that residents and visitors can stroll and enjoy the capital of the Costa Daurada. In addition, it completes one of the most necessary projects for the municipality: the channelling of the ravine that for years has caused flooding in this area of Salou.
The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) has financed the channelling of the Barenys ravine from Carles Roig street to Miramar promenade, with an investment of 15 million euros. This action has allowed the flood zone of the ravine to be eliminated.
The hydraulic works have subsequently been covered, creating this space for walking and communication in the same neighbourhood of La Salut, and between the Ponent area and the access to the sea, as well as an improvement in the connection with the streets of Valencia and Sol.
The development of the roof has been done with the collaboration of the ACA, which has transferred the space to the Salou City Council. The council, for its part, has contributed 110,000 euros to the works to landscape the area and install street furniture and the vertical signage of the new Rambla.
As regards the name, the municipal plenary decided to maintain the historical toponym of the area Rambla de Barenys, since the name “rambla” means the natural course of the water of a stream that collects rainwater and channels it to the sea.
At the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, accompanied by various councillors, explained that this work, long demanded, "is in line with the policies of recovering spaces in favour of people, with interventions in roads, loosening and urban renaturalisation, creating new spaces for people, in a line of work that we have been carrying out for a few years."
Granados also said that the Rambla de Barenys means "a firm commitment to social cohesion and coexistence, as we provide the neighbourhood with a new open and spacious meeting point, which will become a new reference space."
