Way of the Peace

Four radial routes to the center in Waldo, capital of Terra Alta, allowed to visit sites significant in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Terra Alta was the scene during the Civil War of the tragic events of the Battle of the Ebro, from July to November 1938, which lasted 115 days. Several witnesses in the form of monoliths in almost all the peoples of the region remember those facts. Today, rediscovering these places is difficult to imagine the terrible situations that were developed. The silence and peace that is imbued with an invitation to visit them and enjoy the space and nature that we offer. Punta Alta, 705 m high peak of the Sierra Pàndols, is a monument dedicated to peace to all who were fighting in the Battle of the Ebro. From this height, you can enjoy a splendid panoramic view. On clear days, we see much of the Terra Alta, Ribera d'Ebre, Baix Ebre, the massif of Transportation and even the Pyrenees. To get there from Gandesa, take the road C-43 heading toward Pinell de Brai. At 2.6 km, turn right to break the track, passing by the area of leisure Fonteta leads to the shrine of Fontcalda. 1.9 km after this intersection, you are back, where a long winding trail to the left goes to Punta Alta (2.8 km). If he wants to walk, follow the marked trails or PR GR 171 C-98 that since the departure of Waldo toward Pinell de Brai, takes a path to the runway Fontcalda Sanctuary the Fonteta (7.15 km journey to the High Point and 330 m vertical). Another unique site, and the view offered by its historical past, is the viewpoint Coll del Moro, located alongside the N-420, 5 km from the center of Gandesa in the direction towards Caseres. From the viewpoint appreciated all the depression Bot, a large expanse of land that was of Corbera d'Ebre in the E and O to beyond Horta de Sant Joan. Face, considered the mountains of Pàndols and Horses. From here, led by General Franco's fascist side of military operations. The monument was erected after the war in this place is just beside the cemetery called Calar sector, which, combined with field tiles, and the village Marys Coll del Moro, constitute one of the most important archaeological sites peninsula. Waldo, due to its location in a communications hub, was the main target of attack from Republicans, who came to take the town and were forced to defend his position from the mountains that surround it: Pàndols and that of the Horse. Among other attractions, the town offers the wine cellar, designed by Cesar Martinell modernist work and realized in 1919. Also worth a visit Archpriest Church of the Assumption, which highlights the magnificent Romanesque, made according to the canons of the School of Lleida. Where can truly grasp the magnitude of events, is the old village of Corbera d'Ebre, situated 4 miles from Waldo to the N-420 heading NE towards Mora d'Ebre, known as the Montero. Even today you can stroll through its streets and see the houses in ruins. Here stands the majestic St. Peter's church, built c. XVIII, also badly damaged and now, outside of worship. At the foot of the old town, the determination of the villagers of Corbera d'Ebre in vain to grow a new one. Finally, from Gandesa and the road towards the 7231 N-TV, we go to Vilalba Arcs. Before logging in, it breaks right (NE) to the TV-7333 toward the Fatarella to quickly find the Cuatro Caminos, where heavy fighting occurred during the fascist counter. End of itinerary.
