Cornudella de Montsant in Priorat: spectacular nature 2

Cornudella de Montsant   Cornudella de Montsant.Priorat.Costa Dorada. The Montsant and Serra de Prades are a landscape and an excellent framework for practicing a variety of adventure sports at the same time, and put us in direct contact with the wide natural diversity.   Cornudella de Montsant offers all this within the Serra de Prades and the Montsant Mountains. One of the most affordable and most practiced in the field of adventure sports is hiking as Montsant and the Serra de Prades are two mountain where you can discover true gems of nature and breathtaking landscapes. The routes are marked and the Montsant is monitored continuously by members of the brigade of the reserve. The mountain is traversed by long routes: 165.171 and 174 and by a large number of PR that lead to the most beautiful parts of this landscape setting.   Another very common adventure sports in the Serra de Prades is the mountain bike or BTT. In Siurana it is possible to find a company that rents mountain bikes and offers guided tours for the public relative to more specialized users.   More soothing perhaps but no less exciting, is another adventure sports to practice in Cornudella de Montsant: water activities such as kayaks and canoes, two types of canoeing accessible to most that can be practiced in the Siurana Swamp. But the catalog of adventure sports in Cornudella de Montsant does not end here. The more daring can practice flying two-seater paragliding from the Montsant or from Castillejos, depending on their degree of drive and courage.   Nor can we forget a sport that makes Siurana a place known worldwide: climbing. With over 800 tracks spread over different points are a variety of rankings that invite all interested persons from the novice to the most experienced to enjoy breathtaking walls. The greatest difficulty affecting a climber in Siurana is the ninth grade, only suitable for some Siurana sectors. The German Alex Hubbard opened it and so far, only the Catalan Ramon Julia has chained it. Anyway Siurana can be found in many ways fully accessible to people who start to practice this type of adventure sport. Now, it is imperative to be a climber to enjoy Siurana.   The landscape, the walking routes to Gorgs, the dam of Siurana, the Siuranella, Gallicant, Prades, etc.. offer a wide possibilities for hikers who want to know all these landscapes.     Back to menu   Things to see and visit   The village of Cornudella de Montsant was born in the late twelfth century around the parish church of Sant Julia, in the place where it is now the Place de la Vila, around which still can see some houses with pointed arches of the medieval period ( in Vileta Street, on Main Street, in the Rue de l'Esglèsia or Tou Street).   The original population would be surrounded by a wall, as mentioned in medieval documents. The growth of Cornudella de Montsant is articulated along the Main Street and Tou street, on the way to La Morera to Prades. In these streets and the square is the most significant buildings of Cornudella de Montsant, many with facades and decorative elements of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, key moments in the growth of the municipality. Some examples are Cal Toval, number 19 on Main Street, now housing the Museum Peris - Aragonés, or Ca l'Esteve or Aleu, fronted nineteenth century (number 48). In the street of Tou are other interesting buildings, such as Cal Cateri and Cal Miralles, with impressive stone facades of Renaissance style.   At number 10 in the same street are Cal Porret, which preserves Gothic arches inside. On the street of Sant Isidre is located Cal Miquel Polvora, while Cal Cardona is at number 9 in the street of Eres. On the street Sant Jaume number 5 is Cal Curies or Cal Juncosa, in the Plaza de Sant Joan, Cal Carletes or Vinyes, with handrails and wrought iron balcony near the Cal Pinyol, at number 2 of Abeuradors street. The Plaza de la Vila, center of Cornudella de Montsant   Originally it was a space around the first parish church, which over time has become an open area for public use. What first calls our attention are the porches of the XVII - XVIII. In the square include the Renaissance façade of number 1, number 2 and the lintel of the house bearing the number 3, from 1771.   La Fonda El Reco, with long hotel tradition, whose facade is on display in the Spanish Village of Barcelona. We must also mention the number 13, Cal Tomasito, from the eighteenth century.   On Wednesdays, there is a weekly market and is the setting for the main events of Cornudella de Montsant, as the Dance of Sant Cristófol or Great Paella are held on the 11th of September to commemorate the National Day of Catalonia. Other sights to visit the town are Plaza de Sant Joan, the monument of the Artisans in the street and Balç and the shops of the Renaxença and the Íntim, headquarters of separate entities of the population, with a long tradition of associative life. Also interesting are the fountains of Plaza de Sant Joan and the fountain of Dalt, in the street of Sant Andreu.   In Pilar Street is an old chapel dedicated to this. It is a small building of the eighteenth century, served as parish when the church became a fortress in 1875.
